The AOF’s mission to support programs and services that promote Osteopathic medicine and enhance patient-centered care resonates strongly with its 2019 Board President. “This was always an integral part of the type of practice that I went into with my father, grandfather and brother,” says Dr. Levine. “Patients felt they could reach us anytime, and we’d do anything we could to get them the best care they could possibly have by centering the care on their wants and needs.”
President Levine sees the AOF in a strong position to further advance its mission by supporting the great strides DOs and Osteopathic medicine are making. “Osteopathic medicine in becoming a type of health care that more and more people are identifying with -- as not only primary care, but the way health care should be provided.”
A board-certified family physician, Dr. Levine currently serves as the Vice Provost for Graduate Medical Education at Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. In his 35-year career, he has created more than 160 new residency positions, been on faculty at multiple medical schools, and served as team physician for the New Jersey Nets NBA team and for Olympic athletes.
The decision to pursue Osteopathic medicine as a career was an easy one. “I grew up being mentored by my dad and grandfather, both DOs, and saw the intense strength that Osteopathic medicine played in our family dynamic,” he says. In fact, there are 20 DOs in his family in four generations.
As AOF Board President, he will bring his vast knowledge of how the Osteopathic medical profession fits into the larger realm of health care gleaned from years of leadership both outside and within the profession, including terms as president of the American Osteopathic Association and the New Jersey Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons. “I think I can deliver insight into both health care policy and health politics as they pertain to patient-centered care and promoting the profession,” he says.
“It’s an honor to serve as AOF Board President, with so many like minded individuals on the board, working diligently to ensure the Foundation’s mission continued. Whether sponsoring student community service projects or enabling medical missions in underserved regions in the U.S. and abroad, the health care and patient-centeredness would not have been possible without the Foundation helping to sustain programs that provide that care.”
