WHEREAS, the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) was incorporated in 1949 by the American Osteopathic Association's legislative body with the mission to elevate the Osteopathic profession through philanthropic growth and development; and
WHEREAS, the AOF has proudly served the Osteopathic profession for 75 years, supporting key areas including educational scholarships, community service, scholarly research, international mission trips, and professional Osteopathic recognition; and
WHEREAS, from the 1950s to the 1990s, the AOF provided loans to Osteopathic medical students when they were considered a risky investment, and in the years since has forgiven all outstanding loans, transitioning to offering scholarships for Osteopathic medical students today; and
WHEREAS, the AOF is the only national 501(c)(3) charitable Osteopathic foundation that supports and invests in the profession by recognizing Osteopathic students, residents, fellows, physicians, and faculty across the United States and abroad; and
WHEREAS, in 2024, the AOF joins the Osteopathic medical profession in celebrating 150 years since A.T. Still, MD, DO, first developed the concept of Osteopathic medicine. Since then, the profession has grown to include more than 197,000 Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) and Osteopathic medical students, representing 11% of all physicians and 25% of all medical students in the U.S.; and
WHEREAS, the AOF has awarded over $17 million in scholarships, recognized more than 900 leaders in Osteopathic medicine, honored over 150 individuals and organizations annually, granted over 7,000 scholarships and awards, and created more than 100 partnerships in the Osteopathic profession:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRANDON JOHNSON, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO, do hereby recognize the 75th ANNIVERSARY OF THE AMERICAN OSTEOPATHIC FOUNDATION on November 14, 2024, and extend sincere gratitude for its lasting impact on the Osteopathic medical profession and its continued dedication to advancing healthcare through education, recognition, and service.
