The American Osteopathic Foundation’s Rocovich Research Grant was established in 2019 by Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) to recognize founders John Rocovich, JD, and Sue Ellen Rocovich, DO, PhD, in gratitude for their strong support of Osteopathic medicine and the advancement of scientific knowledge through Osteopathic medical research.
Purpose
This research grant is given annually to support the research of one (1) Osteopathic medical student, resident, or new physician in practice who is contributing to scholarly work on the biomechanical, biomedical, or clinical aspects of Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM).
Grant
A grant of $5,000 will be awarded to one (1) individual who exemplifies the grant’s purpose. Grant will be distributed in two installments: first installment of $4,000 upon completion of a grant agreement, and final installment of $1,000 upon completion of a final report.
Eligibility
- An Osteopathic medical student, resident, or physician currently conducting research who will be submitting articles for publication on the biomechanical, biomedical, or clinical aspects of Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM).
- Current AOA membership required to apply. (Students may register for complimentary AOA membership here.)
Application Requirements
- Completed online application – applicants may apply directly.
- Two (2) letters of recommendation, including:
- One (1) letter of recommendation from the applicant’s lead mentor (or advisor) on institutional letterhead, describing their role in the research project, commitment to the applicant’s training, and experience mentoring other students, residents, or junior faculty researchers.
- One (1) letter of recommendation of nominee’s choosing; however, a DO, PhD, or other Osteopathic professional’s recommendation is strongly preferred.
- CV/Resume/Bio sketch.
- Research Project Plan: Clearly outline the background, hypothesis(es), specific aims, and scientific approaches that will be taken to address each specific aim. An impact statement should also be included that describes the importance of this research to the practice of Osteopathic medicine.
- Proof of AOA membership.
Review Process
Applications will be accepted beginning Monday, February 23, 2026, and close on Thursday, April 30, 2026. Incomplete applications will NOT be reviewed. Applications are reviewed by an independent panel; the selected applicant will have the top aggregate score. Applicants and their lead mentor will be notified of funding decisions by July 31, 2026.
The selected recipient will receive one (1) complimentary ticket to attend AOF’s Honors Gala, on Friday, October 23, 2026, in Las Vegas, Nevada, where they will have an opportunity to meet leaders in the Osteopathic profession and will be recognized as the 2026 AOF Rocovich Research Grant recipient in the Honors Tribute Book.
