The AOF Burnett Osteopathic Student Researcher Grant was established by John H. Burnett, DO and Mary M. Burnett, DO to support an Osteopathic medical student for their true dedication to Osteopathic-oriented research.
Purpose
AOF’s Burnett Osteopathic Student Researcher Grant will be given bi-annually to promote research validating the principles and practice of Osteopathic medicine.
Grant
One (1) bi-annual award in the amount of $5,000 will be presented to one (1) OMS II, OMS III or OMS IV student who has demonstrated a commitment to the science of Osteopathic principles and practice, an active interest in clinical or basic science research pertaining to Osteopathic medicine and manipulative treatment, outstanding academic achievement, and noteworthy accomplishments in research.
Eligibility
- OMS II, OMS III or OMS IV in strong standing at a College/School of Osteopathic Medicine (COM/SOM).
- Has completed Osteopathic-oriented research while enrolled in a COM/SOM.
- All aspects of the research must have been conducted while enrolled in Osteopathic medical school.
Application Requirements
- Completed online application form – self nominations are accepted
- One (1) letter of recommendation from an Osteopathic professional confirming research was completed by the applicant.
- A Letter of Good Standing from the Dean or their designee, confirming a strong (above average) academic standing and verification if received, this grant will not render the student ineligible for other grant/scholarship opportunities within the school. An official medical school transcript may be submitted, if a Letter of Good Standing is unavailable.
- A research paper of no more than fifteen (15) pages. Supporting documents such as references, tables, and figures are optional and will not be included in the fifteen-page limit.
- Curriculum vitae or resume
Research Paper Guidelines
- Brief synopsis of the project (approximately three to six sentences).
- Comprehensive description of the research project. Include the significance/scope, overall goals, activities, and benefit to the Osteopathic profession.
- Rationale for developing the research protocol in terms of Osteopathic philosophy or practice; studies of Osteopathic manipulative treatment may be included. The rationale should be clearly stated. Original or unique approaches are encouraged.
- Description of the research questions that were studied.
- General overview of the research plan.
- Significance of the research findings with respect to Osteopathic principles and practice or OMT.
Review Process
Applications close August 12, 2024. Incomplete applications will NOT be reviewed. Applicants will be notified in October and approved grants will be disbursed prior to December 31, 2024 upon completion of the required paperwork.
