The AOF is pleased to recognize Wallie Martinez-Vega as the 2018 recipient of the Thomas A. Quinn, DO, Osteopathic Scholarship.
Currently a third-year osteopathic medical student at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), Student Doctor Martinez-Vega grew up in Puerto Rico, where the only physicians were allopathic. During a summer enrichment program at Case Western Reserve University, he was exposed to osteopathic medicine and says “It was the first-time words resonated with my core, slowly unmasking the path I should take.”
Student Doctor Martinez-Vega was accepted into VCOM and immediately began seeking out leadership and mentoring opportunities: “I realized early on that to satisfy my osteopathic curiosity, I had to get out of my shell and search for those learning experiences,” he says. He became the OMM tutor for his medical school class and attended weekly teaching experiences and workshops hosted by his school’s Student American Academy of Osteopathy Chapter, of which he served as Vice-President in 2017-18.
Student Doctor Martinez-Vega regularly participates in volunteer opportunities, medical mission work and leadership positions, and he has received many awards for his service and scholarship. After graduation, he hopes to pursue an osteopathic-focused family medicine residency program and, one day, help bring osteopathic medicine to Puerto Rico.
