In recognition of her many accomplishments, the AOF is honored to name Iris Charcos as the 2019 Edward & Joanne Loniewski Merit Scholar.
One of the AOF’s newest educational awards, the Edward & Joanne Loniewski Merit Scholarship, recognizes excellence, leadership and service among third- and fourth-year osteopathic medical students enrolled at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM). Established by former AOA President, Edward A. Loniewski, DO, the scholarship will be awarded to one student annually.
Student Doctor Charcos is a fourth-year student at MSUCOM, who graduated from the University of Arizona with a double major in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science, and Anthropology, in 2013. She serves as the student hospital liaison between MSU and Sparrow Hospital.
MSUCOM Associate Dean Katherine Ruger, DO, says that Student Doctor Charcos “has a heart of service, commitment to osteopathy, and serves with curiosity and commitment to her community. Throughout these experiences, she exemplifies the utmost pride and fervor in her pursuit of educational endeavors and dedication to her professional development as a future DO.”
As an immigrant to this country, a minority, and a female medical student, student Doctor Charcos says “Many labels and identifiers have been placed on me in life. Not a single one, nor a summation of all, would be able to define all of me. I am a collection of my thoughts, experiences and decisions that led me to them. The variety of what I have had the privilege to be a part of continues to shape who I am and what I can be as a provider. I look forward to what I am becoming.”
This award will be presented annually at MSUCOM.
