The AOF and the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOOG) are proud to recognize Helen Kristina Martinez-Costa, DO, as the 2018 AOF/ACOOG Outstanding Resident of the Year in Obstetrics & Gynecology.
Dr. Martinez-Costa graduated from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine (NSUCOM) in 2015 and is currently chief resident in her obstetrics and gynecology residency program at Presence Resurrection Healthcare Consortium. Of her residency, she says “I often think how lucky I am to be a part of such a special resident family that sincerely enjoys each other’s company and intellectually challenges one another.”
First drawn to women’s health after her grandmother was treated for ovarian cancer, Dr. Martinez-Costa expressed that she “found her place” during her third-year OB-GYN clinical rotation. “There is nothing else I could see myself doing…in few other specialties do patients come with such intimate concerns that are so inherently challenging. I am honored that patients are willing to trust me with personal information, allowing me to better provide them with the best possible treatment.”
Her commitment to leadership extends beyond residency to coordinating medical student rotations and community outreach. She regularly volunteers through NSUCOM, recording over 300 hours thus far at local health clinics, and she has enjoyed time learning and growing in her profession during a medical mission trip to Ecuador.
Michelle V. Quinn, DO, and Supervising Attending Physician at Dr. Martinez-Costa’s residency program, says, “Helen is an excellent asset to our residency program. She’s been a great advocate for the residents; she works hard to promote fairness, equality and excellent educational opportunities for residents in the program.”
