The AOF and the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) are proud to name Alexandra M. McKenna, DO, as the 2018 AOF/ACOFP Outstanding Resident of the Year in Family Medicine.
Dr. McKenna graduated from the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2015 and completed a family practice residency program at OhioHealth Doctors Hospital Family Practice in June 2018, where she served as Chief Resident.
Of her training, Dr. McKenna says, “I chose this residency due to its strong osteopathic commitment and have been privileged to work with wonderful mentors who have guided me in pursing my dreams.” She is paying it forward by regularly working with osteopathic medical students at OU-HCOM.
Dr. McKenna has been recognized with many awards, including the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Outstanding Resident Teacher Award. “I plan to return to medical education in the future to help promote the education of residents and students in osteopathic family medicine.”
Active in her community, she regularly volunteers at local clinics to work with underserved populations and address their unique barriers to care. She has also participated in research projects and published papers on vaccination rates and advance directives among patients.
Tejal Patel, DO, and Assistant Program Director of Dr. McKenna’s Family Practice Residency Program, says “Dr. McKenna’s compassion is indisputable. I have not met another resident thus far who displays such a mature and thoughtful approach to the care of her patients. She is a true leader and pioneering physician with a drive to improve her practice in the best interest of patient care.”
